Swap India And Australia’s T20 World Cup Hosting Duties: Suggests Sunil Gavaskar
“Will T20 World Cup happen?” this question is troubling a lot of people. The ongoing coronavirus pandemic has led to lockdown in various parts of the world. Thus, many are uncertain about the tournament that is set to be played in October this year. The host for the game was Australia which has already sealed its borders for six months.
In such a scenario, the former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar has come up with a solution. In an interview with India Today, the cricketer said that if India is able to flatten the COVID-19 curve, Australia and BCCI can swap the hosting rights for upcoming World Cup. He also added that even if this happens, IPL can also be played in September.
Here are the excerpts from the interview:
“At the moment, as we all know, Australia has barred foreigners from entering the country till the 30th of September. The tournament is starting from mid-October or the 3rd week of October, so it’s looking a bit difficult at the moment. If it can be done… next year’s T20 World Cup is in India.
“If it can be done… where India and Australia come to an agreement… In case the curve in India flattens out and India and Australia swap… so the T20 World Cup is in India in October-November this year and Australia in October-November next year, then it can happen.
“If it is going to happen that way, then maybe what can happen is the IPL can be held just prior to the T20 World Cup so that it’s enough practice for the players to have T20 World Cup,” Sunil Gavaskar said.
Sunil Gavaskar also said that Asia Cup can also be postponed if India gets the chance to host T20 World Cup. He suggested that Asia Cup can be played in the UAE in December.
The Corona Effect On Sports
The coronavirus pandemic has made the world come to a standstill. Sports has especially felt the tremors with some of the biggest sporting events getting postponed.
