When the government ruled that restaurants can run but only with home deliveries and takeaways, many showed scepticism – will this work? That scepticism has now metamorphosed into a panic when a 19-year-old Pizza delivery guy tested positive for Coronavirus.

The Pizza delivery guy was working at a restaurant in Malviya Nagar, South Delhi. He was delivering food until last Sunday when he fell seriously ill. After showing symptoms of COVID-19, he was admitted to Ram Manohar Lohiya Hospital.

In the last two weeks, he had delivered food to 72 families in South Delhi – Hauz Khas, Malviya Nagar and some part of Savitri Nagar. After finding that the boy is COVID-19 positive, these families have been house quarantined. The district collector of South Delhi, Mr B.M. Mishra, said that they are being monitored closely by the police.

Along with these 72 families, 17 more delivery boys are quarantined in Chhattarpur. These delivery boys were in contact with him for the past 15 days.

The restaurant has been closed for the next two weeks. A statement published by the restaurant says that precautions and vigilance were taken yet this unfortunate event happened. A delivery person was tested positive for Coronavirus. They have shared all the essential information with respective authorities. Police have reached all the customers that were served by this delivery person. The restaurant is serving society and will stand by the delivery person.

The peculiar thing that the police noticed is that the guy has no travel history since the outbreak of Coronavirus. So, there are high chances that he has come into contact with some infected family while delivering food.

As the restaurant was affiliated with the food delivery conglomerate Zomato, it published an official statement after the incident.

The statement says that they are not sure if the delivery person was affected by Coronavirus during food delivery or not. The company said that they are trying their best to ensure the safety of customers, their delivery partners and the restaurant partners.

It is almost impossible to isolate ourselves completely; especially when one needs something essential like food, added Zomato in its statement.

In Delhi alone, the authorities have found more than 1,500 cases of COVID-19. Out of these 1,500, 30 persons have died. While across the country, more than 12,000 cases have been discovered. Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced on Wednesday that the nationwide lockdown has been extended till May 3. Comparing to some European countries, India has been successful in containing COVID-19 spread. According to some speculations, the government may give some flexibility in rules after April 20 in the areas that are not hotspots of novel coronavirus spread.
