New Terminal Building For Port Blair Airport To Handle Rising Passengers
Recently, the Ministry of Civil Aviation made an announcement that Port Blair Airport is all set to get a new terminal to handle the rising passengers. The Veer Savarkar International Airport at Port Blair has witnessed a rise of passengers and currently handles 18 lakh passengers. With the new terminal building, it will be able to handle 50 lakh passengers per annum.
As per the reports, the construction of the new building at Port Blair Airport will be at a cost of Rs. 700 crores. It will have a total built-up area of 40,837 sq that will be able to handle 1200 passengers during peak hours. The building will have three-levels, lower ground, upper ground and first floor.
The statement release by AAI, “The lower ground floor will be used as a remote arrival, departure and service area, the upper ground floor will have an entry gate for departure passengers and exit gate for arrival passengers and the first floor (will be used) as a lounge for international passengers,”

Port Blair Airport’s New Terminal To Be Inspired By Nature
The reports say that the building will be fully-equipped with modern facilities. There will be 28 check-in counters, fiver conveyor belts, three passengers boarding bridges and state-of-the-art security systems.
The city side area will also be developed with adequate parking facilities for bus, taxi and cars respectively.
Not just this, the new building will be inspired by nature. The design of the terminal will be shell-shaped depicting sea and the islands. The new building will also have 100 per cent natural lighting through skylights.
Till now 65 per cent of the construction work has been completed and the new terminal at Port Blair Airport would most probably be ready by the middle of 2021.
