The Cyber Cell of Delhi Police finally found one member of the notorious Instagram group ‘Bois Locker Room.’ The 15-year-old teenager comes from a prominent family of South Delhi and was a member of the group since March this year.

After the screenshots of the group went viral on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook, the cyber cell of Delhi Police took the matter on its own and lodged a formal complaint. The FIR is filed in Saket police Station.

Talking to the media, a senior police official said, “In their complaint, school authorities requested police to investigate the incident. Police, using technical surveillance, got the registered number of the 15-year-old, who had allegedly shared a photograph on the group. His phone was switched off. After finding his address, he was apprehended on Monday evening.”

According to the findings of the cyber cell, most of the group members are teenage boys studying in leading South Delhi schools. Only a few members are old enough to study in college.

The FIR is lodged under Sections 465, 471, 469, 509, 67, and 67A, which are used in the cases of forgery, publishing sexually explicit content and personal data without consent, etc.

Quick Reactions on Social Media Platforms

It all began when an Instagram handle, where underage boys from schools used to objectify underage girls, morph their images and glorify rape culture was exposed by a girl.

As soon as the screenshots start floating around the Internet, people started to question the legitimacy of Social Media in the younger generation’s life. As it could have affected the public relations of big social media platforms, they were quick to denounce such content sharing.

Facebook released an official statement on Bois Locker Room incident. The statement says, “We absolutely do not allow behavior that promotes sexual violence or exploits anyone, especially women and young people, and have actioned content violating our Community Standards as we were made aware of it. We have policies that disallow the sharing of non-consensual intimate imagery, as well as threats to share such imagery, and we take this issue very seriously. Ensuring our community can express themselves in a safe and respectful way is our top priority.”

Authorities from Instagram have also confirmed to the media that they in constant touch with police regarding the case probe.

The Conversation

This incident has started a healthy conversation on the rape culture and normalization of sexual violence of women, be it physical or verbal. Some people are saying the fault is of Social Media, while others are saying that parents should have kept a watch on their children.

Media personalities have also jumped in the conversation. Actor Maanvi Gagroo wrote an open letter about the incident. She said that we just could not absolve our responsibility by blaming lousy parenting.

The probe is going on, and the cyber cell is still looking for more technical evidence. We will update the news as soon as the case develops further.
