Aurangabad Train Accident: 16 Migrant Workers Run Over By Train

At least 16 migrant workers were run over by a goods train in the Aurangabad district of Maharashtra on Friday, May 8. There are four companions of them who somehow escaped the Aurangabad train accident, but are seriously injured.

According to a news report by ANI, the survivors are in deep shock after the incident and are referred to the civil hospital of Aurangabad.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi took cognizance of the accident and tweeted that he is “extremely anguished” to hear the death of migrant workers and has talked to Railway Minister Piyush Goyal about the accident.

According to local police, the migrants worked were working in an iron factory in Jalna before lockdown. Now, they were returning to their home in Bhuvasal. The distance between Jalna and Bhuvasal is 170 Km. They covered 45 Km on foot and were resting on tracks in Aurangabad.

The incident occurred at 6:30 am on Friday morning.

Ministry of Railways took to Twitter, saying that the loco pilot tried to stop the train but eventually hit the laborers.

Talking to media, The SP of Aurangabad, Mr. SP Mokshada Patil, said, “We are questioning four people who were at a slight distance. They are in shock. We are talking to them and trying to verify information about where they are from and how did they leave. The process is underway.”

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi raged on authorities for such treatment with migrant workers. He wrote on Twitter, “I’m shocked by the news of a goods train running over migrant laborers. Our national builders should be ashamed of their treatment to migrant workers. I express my condolences for the families of killed migrant workers and pray for the recovery of those injured.”

The Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, Mr. Shivraj Singh Chouhan, expressed condolences and talked to Railway Minister Piyush Goyal. The CM said that the government would arrange help for the families of those deceased in the accident. He already has announced Rs 5 lakh compensation of families of migrant workers.

Madhya Pradesh governmental officials said that the minister has also contacted Uddhav Thackeray, the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, to arrange medical help for the injured.
