The announcement was made through a blog post by Google President of Commerce Bill Ready. In the post, he wrote:

“Beginning next week, search results on the Shopping tab will consist primarily of free listings, helping merchants better connect with consumers, regardless of whether they advertise on Google.

“With hundreds of millions of shopping searches on Google each day, we know that many retailers have the items people need in stock and ready to ship, but are less discoverable online.” added Bill.

Bill also said that existing users of Merchant Center and Shopping ads do not need to do anything to take the advantage of this change. As far as the new users are concerned, the company is trying to streamline a process for the upcoming weeks.

Why This Step?

While the retail sector was already facing downfall for the past few years, the outbreak of COVID-19 only made the situation worse. Almost all the physical stores are shut. This makes digital commerce the only way to earn their living.

Since many businesses can not afford the paid ads, Google has decided to make it free to sell on Google. This will help the merchants in getting proper exposure to millions of customers. For consumers, this change will mean more products, easily available through Shopping List.

Moreover, this step by Google can give a stiff competition to Amazon. The decision will also entice more merchants to Google’s Shopping list and prove profitable in the longer term.

When Will This Begin?

In the first phase, the free listing will commence in the US by the end of April. Google may extend the same across the globe in upcoming months.

Not just this, the company is partnering with PayPal for this monumental change. Through this partnership, Google will easily get more merchants for the listing. This will allow the business owners and merchants to directly link their PayPal account with Google Shopping for payments.

The company has also created a help desk offering details to how to participate in the free product listing.

The global economy is facing a crisis and this step by Google can surely help the struggling retailers and merchants to make money in times of quarantine.
