Mizoram To Resume Class 12 Board Exams Amidst Lockdown

The Mizoram Board of School Education (MBSE) has recently announced that it will conduct Class 12 board exam from April 22. This decision comes despite the strong opposition from a section of students and the Centre’s guidelines that no educational institutions will open until May 3 owing to the nationwide lockdown.

As per the notification, High School Leaving Certificate (HSSLC) examination for Arts, Science and Commerce subjects will be held from April 22 to April 24.

The exams will be conducted in the examination centres all over the state. Students are advised to report to the nearest examination centres.

On Wednesday, The State Education Minister Lalchhandama Ralte said that this decision is being taken as board exams were suddenly suspended. Now, the cabinet, political parties, NGOs, student bodies had suggested the re-commencement of the board exams.

The Protest From Students

Recently, a group of students from the state started a no exam campaign on social media platforms. They demanded that the exams should either be postponed or re-scheduled.

The students have argued that due to the nationwide lockdown, many have gone outside the state or are staying in the villages. Now, it is quite impossible for them to move or travel to the concerned centres for the examinations.

In addition, the students are also blaming the state government for changing their decision about the examination. Earlier, the government has said that the exams will be resumed after the lockdown period.

Violation of MHA Guidelines

The resumption of board exams in Mizoram is in complete violation of the guidelines provided by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).

Siaha District Deputy Commissioner Bhupesh Chaudhary has written a letter to the controller of examination of the MBSE regarding this violation.

The letter states that since the notification is in clear violation of the MHA guidelines, no examination will be allowed in Siaha District. “The notification for re-commencement of HSSLC (Arts, Science and Commerce) examination from April 22 in Siaha is a clear violation of the MHA order and therefore, no exemption can be accorded to the conduction of the class-12 board examinations,” Chaudhary said in the letter.

Notably, the consolidated guidelines by MHA that was issued on April 15 ordered that to contain the spread of coronavirus, “all educational, training, coaching institutions, among others will remain suspended till May 3.”
